Prevalence of cervical human papillomavirus infection and types among women immigrated to Sicily, Italy.

We determined the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) cervical infection and HPV genotypes among 115 women immigrating to Sicily (Italy), with regard to abnormal cytology and socio-behavioral characteristics in a cross-sectional, observational study. Information was collected with the help of cultural mediators/translators. HPV-DNA was assayed by the INNOLiPA HPV assay and a nested PCR/sequencing method. Sixty (52.2%) women came from sub-Saharan Africa and 55 (47.8%) from Eastern Europe. HPV infection was found in 55 (47.8%) women. This article explores paradoxes that emerge in the mentoring of highly-educated, female, foreign-born job-seekers in Finland. Theoretically, the study is linked to the growing body of research scrutinising the integration or discrimination of migrants in working life. It analyses cultural practices and ideas that are visible and affect the mentoring interaction. A partire dalla definizione di sfruttamento e dalla problematizzazione dell'idea di libertà contrattuale e di consenso, il contributo analizza alcuni casi di grave sfruttamento lavorativo e di tratta ai danni delle donne migranti nell'ambito del settore domestico e di quello agricolo. I dati e le interviste qualitative raccolte sul campo confermano quindi le premesse teoriche (e normative) che avevano ricostruito la vulnerabilità in termini di mancanza di alternative percorribili e la tratta come abuso della posizione di vulnerabilità così definita.

Immigrant women during the period of mass migration received little public attention. However, when some of them became protagonists in sensational murder cases, they burst into the public sphere. Analyzing the representation of Josephine Terranova and other female Italian-American murderers in both the yellow press and the Italian-American press shows how some of these invisible women were able to assert themselves in the public sphere and achieve a degree of agency despite their tragic circumstances.
